Multiple Grades

INSTRUCTIONS We currently have the Roots, Prefixes, Suffixes program installed at both elementary schools. This program has literacy activities for Grades 1 - 4.

Grade 1


LESSON PLAN - Alphabet Order Students will put five words in alphabet order. Each word has the beginning letter highlighted. The set of words becomes more difficult as students advance.

Grade 2

LESSON PLAN - Reading Comprehension Students will

Using an online site, students read a passage and answer questions about the content. The program provides a student score for each passage. Passages are based on science and social studies SOLs.

LESSON PLAN

Students will learn how to perform keyword searches for graphics, resize graphics, tab, and perform basic font formatting while creating a pictorial alphabet book. These books can be given to kindergarten classes to help them learn the alphabet. Sample alphabets are included.

Students will use Drawing 4 Children to illustrate five nouns and then write a sentence incorporating each noun.


Grade 3

LESSON PLAN - Reading for Meaning Students will read a passage while it is read aloud, then complete a graphic organizer which will help them to understand the passage and answer follow-up questions which ask them to apply what they've learned. Passages are organized by category: Main Idea, Sequence of Events, Cause and Effect, Compare and Contrast, Inference. Passages are also grouped by reading level. Level 1 - grades 2 - 4, Level 2 - grades 3 - 5, and Level 3 - grades 5 -8 depending on student abilities
LESSON PLAN - LA 3 Reading Comprehension Students will read a variety of passages relating to science and social studies SOLs for grades 2 and 3. After each passage they will answer questions to check their understanding of the passage. Many answers are fill in the blank rather than multiple choice so students must really understand the passage and question rather than guessing at an answer. Students are given a score at the end of the questions indicating how well they understand the passage.


Grade 4

LESSON PLAN - Synonyms and Antonyms Students will complete several activities where they must find either a word with the opposite or same meaning as a given word. One of the activities will also provide problems involving homophones.
