Life Processes- Life Cycles

LESSON PLAN - S 1 Physical Features of Animals Students will identify common animals in a habitat by their distinctive features.

LESSON PLAN S 1 Dressing for Winter Students will color a winter scene and then dress the four children in the scene with appropriate clothes for a day outside in winter when it's snowing.

VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP - S 2 Butterfly Metamorphosis NABA International Butterfly Park
WORKSHEETS:
To be used with the virtual field trip to the NABA International Butterfly Park.

LESSON PLANS: Life Cycle of the Butterfly

LESSON PLAN Plant Power.
Based on National Geographic site Students read about plants and answer questions online. The worksheet contains different questions and can be used for a science grade.
WORKSHEET: S 4 All About Plants
LESSON PLAN
Students will learn about the parts of a plant using the Encyclopedia of Nature program.

Life Processes - Adaptations

LESSON PLAN - S 3 What is Camouflage? Students will learn about the different types of camouflage by finding hidden animals in a series of photographs.
LESSON PLAN:
Based on a National Geographic site: African Safari Lesson plan includes student worksheet.
LESSON PLAN:
Students will enter a virtual desert and learn about a variety of desert animals and their adaptations. Worksheet included.
LESSON PLAN:
Discovery Video: Animal Adaptations: What Are They
Students will watch a short video about a variety of animals and their adaptations and answer questions about adaptation.
LESSON PLAN - Squish the Fish
Students will visit the Shedd’s Aquarium Web site and experience the interactive feature Squish the Fish. They will learn about different undersea organisms and the adaptations they have developed to survive. Worksheet included.
Squish the Fish

LESSON PLAN:
This site lets them choose the shape, color, mouth, etc of their fish. For each option, the program will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each option. After the students complete their fish they will learn about the best habitat and food for their fish based on its adaptations. The students can then try to fill their fish with food while escaping predators. Have the students write a paragraph or more about their fish and its adaptations. Build a Fish
LESSON PLAN:
Introduction to camouflage: Students look at actual photographs of camouflaged animals. They must try to pick out the hidden animal. This is great for whole class instruction with an interactive whiteboard or just an LCD projector and screen.
Hidden Animals

Living Systems -Habitats

LESSON PLAN

Students will use Tux Paint to draw a habitat and populate with the appropriate animals.

LESSON PLAN:

National Geographic interactive site--students must select the correct items to create a tiger habitat. Worksheet included.
LESSON PLAN:
Now that students know the necessary elements of a tiger's habitat, they will use an art program to draw their own tiger habitat.
LESSON PLAN:
Based on a National Geographic virtual rainforest: The Rainforest. Lesson plan includes student worksheet.

Living Systems - Food Chains and Webs

LESSON PLAN - S 3 Food Chains Students will learn about carnivores, herbivores, decomposers, producers, and consumers. They will then complete three activities on the roles of different animals and complete simple and complex food chains.
SMARTBOARD LESSON:
Students, either working alone or as a class using the SmartBoard will label the roles of organisms in a food chain and answer questions about food chains. Includes SmartBoard activity/worksheet.

LESSON PLAN:
Students will use the Encyclopedia of Nature to determine the role of animals in food chains and create a food chain. Worksheet included.
LESSON PLAN:
Based on the Discovery Education video Mystery of the Food Chain. Includes a student worksheet.
LESSON PLAN:
Using the Encyclopedia of Nature, students will study a variety of habitats and the animals who live there and determine their role in the food chain. Worksheet included.

LESSON PLAN:
Students compete in teams. Uses Inspiration.

Interrelationships in Earth/Space Systems

LESSON PLAN
Students will create weather maps for the United States. Includes coverage of US History 1 SOLs in using maps and regions and geographic features of the US. (based on a lesson by S. Remaley)

LESSON PLAN
Students will use an online site EdHeads Weather to learn how to read weather maps and report the weather. They will then learn how to make 3 day weather predictions using factors such as precipitation, temperature, wind speed, fronts, etc. Weather Test provides a written assessment.
LESSON PLAN
Students will explore the site Weather Images and answer questions using weather maps, satellite and radar images.
LESSON PLANS AND ACTIVITIES:
NASA's guide to teaching the moon.
WORKSHEETS:
Based on National Geographic site. Students read about weather phenomenon and answer questions. The worksheet contains different questions and can be used for a science grade.
Weather Wizards

Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change

LESSON PLANS AND ACTIVITIES:
NASA's guide to teaching Earth Systems including the water cycle, the earth from space, global warming, and man's impact.
LESSON PLAN:
Based on interactive web sites. Worksheet included
